As presented by Yael Selfin, Chief Economist at KPMG UK, on Airmic LIVE earlier this week – the emergence of the Omicron variant throws a spanner in the economic recovery, elevating the level of uncertainty about the recovery path from the pandemic. While the impact is not expected to be as severe as at the start of the pandemic, or even the beginning of this year, increased uncertainty and the potential reintroduction of social distancing measures could see output fall.

Collaboration between academia and industry during the pandemic has been unprecedented, and interviewees for this article praised the energy, enthusiasm and can-do attitude that they found in universities. But they also noted the limitations that virtual communication and lockdown restrictions have imposed on collaboration. They also urged more clarity on ownership of data and of intellectual property — areas where discussions with academic colleagues have been difficult.
