Risk professionals can assess, measure and benchmark their career progress with most comprehensive tool to date.
Airmic has published a detailed and practical framework designed to help members understand their career progression, identify skills gaps and make smarter career choices.
The new Competency Framework outlines the knowledge, skills and behaviour required of its members at different stages of their careers, as well has five core principles that should guide all actions and decisions.
Unlike other competency frameworks, it is tailormade for risk professionals, having been researched and designed by a working group of Airmic members.
“We wanted the Framework to have practical value and be grounded in real world experience. That’s why it was so important it was written by our members for our members,” says Adam Ireland, Airmic’s head of learning, who oversaw the project.
Members at any stage in their career can complete the assessment tool to evaluate their current level of competence across a wide range of core and specialist skills, knowledge and behaviours. The five levels of competence, which correspond to the stages in Airmic’s Professional Journey, are entry, emerging, established, excelling and authoritative.
Carving a path to risk leadership
Martin Sutton, director of TMS Consultancy Services and part of the member working group, said the Framework will help risk professionals articulate their value and reach leadership postions: "It sets out clearly what principles, knowledge, skills and behaviours are needed for you to succeed up to the executive level as a risk leader.
“You can plot your pathway up the competency levels, decide on which specialist areas you want to focus on, and evolve your own journey to being an authoritative leader in risk. Once you have done your own assessment, demonstrating what skills and value you bring has never been easier. I have found it invaluable"
Technical expertise is no longer enough to thrive professionally, says Airmic’s Ireland: “Today our members require commercial acumen, collaborative skills and the ability to influence people and outcomes to name just a few. We’ve designed our Framework to help members understand and meet these expectations.”
The Framework works in tandem with Airmic’s Professional Journey – a strategic career roadmap, structured around the idea that professional growth is a lifelong continuum.
Airmic members can access an ecosystem of learning and development opportunities targeted at each stage of the journey, such as development programmes, events, webinars and the Technical Library.
