Lloyd's leadership programme hailed a success

The latest two-day Lloyd's leadership programme for Airmic members took place last month, helping to give them a better understanding of how the market works.

Originally developed with fastTrack in mind but open to any member, the programme is intended to help buyers of insurance. It included an overview from Keith Stern, Country Manager for the UK and Ireland, plus talks from Lloyd's specialists on different types of risk. The highlight for most participants was the opportunity to sit at a box shadowing an underwriter, learning the thought processes that go into writing (or not) the risks that are presented.

Afterwards Georgina Wainwright, Airmic R&D Manager, said the programme had been greatly appreciated by those who took part. "These courses are always popular and generally over-subscribed because it helps risk managers make the best use of the market. We plan to do the same in 2019," she said.

The programme, which is a modified version of the one that Lloyd's developed for FERMA, has been going for four years.

"Extremely valuable - I cannot overstate it" - one member's perspective

Tom Hudson, a group insurance and risk manager who has been in the business for more than eighteen years, saw joining the course as "an ideal opportunity to extend my knowledge of the market."

Since Lloyd's is an important source of cover, he wanted to learn at first hand the pressures that brokers and insurers are under "to enable me to place risks in a more commercial manner."

And his verdict: "Extremely valuable - I cannot overstate it." He particularly highlighted the time spent at a box as "fantastic in understanding how risks are broked to Lloyd's."
