The Top risks and megatrends 2020 report was published on 1 July, but the conversation continues in the fortnightly Airmic podcast series.

In the last two episodes the pandemic, climate change, geopolitics, cyber and resilience have all been discussed in depth on Airmic Talks.

In part one Lucy Stanbrough, Research Manager for the Willis Research Network on Emerging Risks at Willis Towers Watson, discusses the trends in geopolitics risk professionals should be mindful of while Airmic’s Julia Graham addresses what we’ve learned from the pandemic.

“Even though we’ve only got five geopolitical risks highlighted in the risks and megatrends map, every single one of the other risks and geopolitical connotations to them and that is a big takeaway,” said Ms Stanbrough.

In part two, Richard is joined by Cécile Fresneau, Executive Director of the UK Insurance Division at QBE Insurance, and James Owen, a Partner at Control Risks and head of their Cyber Security practice in Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

Ms Fresneau discusses resilience in an unpredictable year with reference to both the survey report and the QBE Unpredicability Index.

“In a world that is uncertain, it makes it really difficult for businesses to be able to set a strategy and stick to it - to undertake strategic planning and have a level of confidence in the resources that are being put into those initiative and the belief that they will be able to deliver,” she said.

“In a world that is more unpredictable to be able t0 plan to recover quickly from challenges, it means creating options. And creating options is difficult and expensive.”

Two of the top three risks identified by the Airmic survey were cyber related, and Mr Owen dives into the trends in cyber security and the fast changing digital world.

“The pandemic has accelerated the move of business using the cloud, social networking and mobile computing based technology much more rapidly than would have been the case,” he explained.

“It’s put technology even more at the centre of everything we do and, as a result, increased the stresses and strains on how we secure that technology, which is stretching in turn traditional corporate approaches to what is, and is not now secure in an organisation.”
