New generation risks demand new generation risk professionals

In this edition of Airmic News, an article by Jim Wetekamp, CEO of Airmic Partner Riskonnect, discusses the risks and opportunities associated with Artificial Intelligence (AI). “Used properly – with the right people, processes and governance – AI can be an unparalleled business asset,” he writes. I lean in on the words “used properly with the right people”. Effective use of AI demands the right knowledge and skills – our future fit talent.

Just as new risks materialise, so too will the need for emerging knowledge and skills – to help us understand these new risks which have no respect for long established actuarial and risk principles. Other skills will be steady; some might become redundant. It is important we understand these “boundaries” of knowledge and skills.

The World Economic Forum’s bi-annual Future of Jobs Report published in January, followed technological, societal and economic trends to help understand occupational disruption and provide insight to opportunities for us to transition to the jobs of the future. I wonder how this report and its conclusions might change by the time it is published in 2027, given the pace of change.

The AI genie has left the bottle, and we can’t put it back – nor should we want to. At Airmic, we strive to provide knowledge and learning that is intelligent, not artificial. For example, Friday Reading – our weekly series of curated items – are scanned and checked for authenticity and value. The theme each week is topical and relevant to our business and risk environment – we consider how they relate to converging challenges shaping our connected world.

This edition focuses on our profession and how we can stay future fit. My editorial in not intended to be an examination of what the future holds, but a commitment from Airmic to our members and partners to be sensitive to change, to keep pace, and to react and adapt – all hallmarks of resilience.

As with any organisation we cannot rest on our successes to see us through the future.
