In 2011 Airmic launched the first cycle of its mentoring scheme. We matched 20 mentors and mentees, based on their individual careers and experiences and their desired goals.
At Airmic, mentoring is a partnership that enables the exchange of best practice and the open consideration of career opportunities. A successful partnership can overcome the common concern of risk and insurance practitioners that they tend to sit on their own within their organisations, making it difficult to exchange ideas with others in the field.
We steer away from the traditional view that mentoring is for “young”members, mentored by “mature”members. Rather we believe that any member can take on either role, for example a risk manager moving into a new sector or taking on a new task may be looking for practical guidance from outside their organisation and therefore wish to be a mentee.
Earlier this year we surveyed all the current participants of the scheme and found that feedback was generally excellent.
It has forced me to analyse the way I have done things in the past, which is useful –Paul Goulding, BAA Airports (Mentor)
Great sounding board – can discuss achievements, failings, lessons learnt confidentially. It's nice to build a relationship with someone outside your immediate circle of colleagues. A mentor can be someone to help introduce you to other people at the conference or events when you don’t know many people in the industry – a friendly face! - Amy Huitson, Christie’s (Mentee)
Several pairs advised that they believe that mentoring is a finite relationship, complete once the specific aims or goals have been achieved. With this in mind, we have decided to relaunch the scheme, hoping to welcome fresh participants, and shuffle any partnerships that feel they have gained all they can from their mentor / mentee relationship
If you are interested in getting involved please visit the Mentoring Page on our website, where you can read more about the scheme and how to get involved. Alternatively please visit us at the Airmic stand at the Annual Conference 2013. Here you can talk to previous participants and sign up to join. http://www.airmic.com/mentoring-scheme
