Alastair Campbell became one of the most controversial figures of the Blair years when he ran the media operation at 10 Downing Street. Referred to unofficially as the real deputy Prime Minister, Campbell was admired, feared and disliked in equal measure. He was previously political editor at the Daily Mirror.
The broadcaster and author Justin Webb is the other recruit. A former BBC Washington correspondent, he is now one of the corporation’s leading journalists as presenter of the Today programme. He has also written a widely-acclaimed book about the United States.
