Why CPD sharpens judgement and nurtures confidence

Published on Thu, 02/04/2026 - 18:18

Airmic’s head of learning, Adam Ireland, reminds members why continual professional development is more important than ever for a vibrant career.

In a world defined by volatility, the greatest risk for a risk professional is complacency.

Today’s risk leaders are expected to interpret geopolitical instability, assess cyber resilience and advise boards on strategic uncertainty. They are no longer record-keepers of risk; they are translators of complexity and partners in decision-making.

As this mandate expands, so too does the need to remain current. Continuing Professional Development (CPD) has long been important – today it’s an imperative.

Regulatory scrutiny alone makes the case. In the UK, oversight from bodies such as the Financial Conduct Authority continues to tighten around governance, conduct and operational resilience.

International frameworks, including standards issued by the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO), increasingly shape enterprise risk practice. To advise with authority, professionals must understand not just what the rules say, but how they are evolving.

But CPD goes beyond compliance. Boards now look to risk professionals for insight into the threats - and opportunities - arising from digital transformation, artificial intelligence, supply chain disruption and reputational exposure.

That demands commercial awareness, technological fluency, and strategic judgement alongside technical expertise.

Anticipate, challenge and engage with confidence

Structured, continuous learning builds and refreshes that broader capability. It enables professionals to anticipate rather than react, to challenge assumptions and to engage confidently with the c-suite.

It sharpens judgement - still the most valuable asset in any risk function. A visible commitment to development also signals professionalism, curiosity and accountability - qualities that differentiate individuals in a competitive talent market and the promote the wider profession.

Airmic actively champions the planning, completion and recording of CPD by its members. We provide over 400 hours per year of structured and unstructured CPD opportunities, including events, training courses, development programmes, webinars, workshops, masterclasses, technical publications, roundtables, Special Interest Groups, and the weekly Friday Reading List.

Wherever possible, structured CPD hours or points are highlighted against Airmic’s activities to help members track and demonstrate their development.

Ultimately, CPD is about resilience – not of systems, but of people. In uncertain times, standing still is not stability; it is exposure. Continuous development remains the most effective defence against the complacency that poses the greatest risk of all.
