Twenty-seven percent of respondents in this week’s Airmic Big Question said they do not feel well prepared for a flood event.
Every year, floods destroy assets worth billions of dollars. In the last five years, losses from flooding worldwide amounted to US$320bn, of which roughly US$56bn was insured. From a long-term perspective, only storms cause greater economic losses worldwide than floods.
Some of the respondents said organisations could have flood mitigation measures and emergency response plans in place – but that the events earlier this year in the United Arab Emirates and Brazil show that floods can arise even in places where they are not expected, and that can be a major challenge to mitigate. They also expect critical suppliers or infrastructure to also be impacted, causing significant interruption to their business nevertheless.
