Lloyd’s of London has unveiled a new memorial at its City headquarters this month to commemorate the victims of the transatlantic slave trade.
The monument forms part of the insurance market’s ongoing efforts to acknowledge its historic ties to slavery and promote greater inclusion and accountability within the organisation.
Lloyd’s said the plaque was the result of consultations with over 200 black and ethnically diverse colleagues, and aims “to provide a space where we can reflect, remember and learn from our past.
Michael Lomas, head of culture, talent and communities, at Lloyd’s, said that having an “artistic response” was important: “It took from the corporate right to the emotional, and it allowed people to connect with this subject which has been taboo for far too long. It speaks of being transparent about the history and learning the lessons from it.”
Airmic was represented at the event by its CEO, Julia Graham.
