A new book by Lord Tim Clement-Jones has brought together a practical framework for the governance and regulation of artificial intelligence (AI).

Lord Tim Clement-Jones’s Living with the algorithm: Servant or master? AI governance and policy for the future addresses the key question of how we can mitigate the known and unknown risks of AI, with innovation-friendly approaches to regulating AI.

Lord Clement-Jones was Chair of the House of Lords Select Committee on AI and is the co-founder and co-chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on AI. He was a Partner of the global law firm DLA Piper and held a number of senior roles there including Head of UK Government Affairs and London Managing Partner.

He is a good friend of Airmic and has sponsored and hosted a number of roundtables and presentations with Airmic Partners AIG at the House of Lords.

His mantra is that “Change starts with ideas and is achieved by actions.”

The book looks at a wide range of issues in AI, relating to facial recognition technology, lethal autonomous weapons, democracy and the freedom of speech – especially crucial in 2024 as the landmark year of elections around the world.

The central problem today he believes is that while we need common international standards for the ethical design, risk assessment, testing and audit of AI systems, there has been no agreement about the extent to which these should be made mandatory through law or regulations. Here, Lord Clement-Jones calls for all stakeholders to commit to making different standards interoperable.
