Artificial Intelligence – should we be bothered?

Artificial Intelligence (AI) isn’t new we’re constantly being told, but then why is AI currently such hot news?

The issue is that it depends on the velocity of change and whose hands the power of AI fueled progress is in – in good hands it can be used to stimulate amazing innovations, in bad hands the opposite like anything else, can be true.

Some reassurance may come from effective regulation and the policing of this – but the AI genie is out of the bottle and regulation cannot be relied upon consistently and globally.

We are hostage to the transparency and competence of those leading our world and our businesses - in them we must trust.  The Edleman Trust Barometer will I think make an especially interesting read when next published in early 2024.In recent Edelman reports there has been a visible shift in those we trust from governments to business leaders. Let’s hope our leaders are up to the AI job.

Is this the fifth industrial revolution?  Some think we are yet to fully enter the fourth.  We are certainly in a new revolution rather than a slow-moving period of evolution.

At Airmic we are embracing AI in everything we do – not treating AI as a risk but a state.

Risk professionals must focus on strategic ambitions and commercial priorities, master new technologies, understand business and technology dynamics and partner the business as timekeepers helping to synchronise internal business reactions with external realities. This is nothing new.  (Roads to Revolution – Airmic, 2019).

We plan to start with understanding the basics – not assuming everyone has a common level of understanding.  At least that way we can be more confident in helping our members to ask questions, even if the jury is out on many of the answers.
