Workshops and seminars are the backbone of the Airmic annual conference – and this year’s are as varied as ever. Here we provide you with a flavour of what to expect – more breakout sessions will be highlighted in the June edition.

Monday 16th June, 4.00pm – 5.15pm

A3 - Arthur J. Gallagher

D&O: Making the market work for you

Despite ever-tightening corporate governance, there’s no shortage of insurers competing for directors’ & officers’ liability business. Decisions are becoming increasingly complex for risk managers attempting to attract premier providers, spot genuine coverage game-changers and ensure their claims get paid.

Make sure you maximise risk attractiveness and get the best from a tripartite relationship by joining our interactive workshop covering:

  • Risk Analysis – making the most of the information available
  • Non-traditional D&O markets – what they are, pros and cons
  • Claims handling – confidentiality vs. conflict
  • Legislative landscape – what’s changing and how this impacts your business

A4 - Swiss Re Corporate Solutions

How can you protect your earnings from Mother Nature's scorn?

Did your business suffer from the effects of the violent wind and rain storms this winter? Did you know that you can insure not only your assets but also your cash flow from the negative effects of the weather,? Would you like to learn how?  Then register for workshop A4 and join Swiss Re Corporate Solutions on Monday 16th June to learn about weather insurance, the types of cover available and the kinds of companies that are using them.

A7 – Herbert Smith Freehills with Law Commissioner David Hertzell

A New Dawn for Insurance Law?

The law governing insurance policies is set to undergo its greatest change since the turn of the 20th century. At this year's Airmic Conference Herbert Smith Freehills and David Hertzell, Law Commissioner for commercial and common law, are running a workshop in which they will discuss the proposed changes to the law governing contracts of insurance and what those changes will mean for policyholders.  The panel will also consider how policyholders can navigate the pitfalls that currently exist. Attendees will have the opportunity to question the panel on the proposals and discuss their experiences of policy placement and claims handling.

Tuesday 17th June, 12.00pm – 1.15pm

Workshop B4  - RSA

Solvency 11 – what does it really mean?

After talking about the impacts of Solvency II for a number of years, European insurance companies are having to move at pace to be ready for January 2016. The additional capital management and reporting requirements will impact captive entities to varying degrees as well and may lead risk managers to reconsider how they are used in their programmes. At the June AIRMIC Conference RSA and Willis Global Captives Practice will be taking a look at Solvency II and its potential impacts in a session that will include:

  • A view on Solvency II current status and implications and impact.
  • Assessment of credit risk, collateral security and alternative vehicles for longer term management of the captive retained liabilities.
  • A review of differing captive domiciles relative to efficiencies and meeting client core objectives.
  • Considerations of an Insurer with regard to fronting risk.

Workshop B5 - BLM

Product Liability Recall

BLM’s product liability and recall workshop will provide clear, concise legal advice on positively handling a recall and the associated issues for product liability. The workshop will guide you through topics such as managing your supply chain and pursuing an effective recovery, protecting your brand, working with your insurer, and keeping your regulator happy.

Workshop B8 – Allianz Global Corporate & Specialty

Programmed to succeed - the future of global insurance solutions

Globalisation is an irreversible trend. International trade has developed rapidly in the past three decades and the most successful companies – whatever the size – are constantly adapting their manufacturing and sales strategies to take advantage of newly opened markets. As companies expand, so their assets and potential liabilities increase. To complement an organisation’s own internal risk management and mitigation, the concept of a global insurance programme has never been more relevant. Our workshop will examine the main factors driving global programme expansion, highlight how delivery is being shaped to meet the needs of today’s insurance buyers and emphasise the key role that regular, in-depth communication plays in successful programme implementation.

Wednesday 18 June, 10.15 am – 11.15 am.

Seminar S2 – Mactavish

Financial Materiality of Insurance

Is insurance important? Why does it get less senior attention than other forms of money, when it’s just as valuable and is often more complex to arrange - in terms of disclosure, obligations and coverage? If a major loss were disputed, how would the business cope? Is your insurance programme good value? And what do the answers dictate in terms of placing risk? The Mactavish seminar will help you answer these questions and demonstrate how vital insurance is and how, unlike most financial products, it is co-created through the placement process.  Creating reliable insurance starts with knowing how much it matters.

Seminar S4 – Axco and Airmic

Compliance solutions for global insurance programmes – A new database for Airmic members

Axco and Airmic will present the newly launched 'Insight Risk Manager', a database of international insurance regulatory information, targeted specifically at insurance buyers and an exclusive benefit of Airmic membership. The seminar will address the regulatory issues surrounding multinational insurance programmes and the requirement, on the part of the insurance buyers, for a consistent, independent source of information. Airmic members will discuss their experience of using the tool and a demonstration will be provided to assist users in obtaining optimum value from the service going forward.

Seminar S5 – Pool Re

How terrorism cover for commercial property is changing

Pool Re has been around for 20 years and though it continues to underpin the provision of terrorism cover in Great Britain, there is a clear need for it to evolve to meet the challenges of the next 20 years. In their seminar Pool Re will examine some of the ways in which the scheme might change, how the interests of various stakeholder groups must be managed and how some of these changes could be beneficial to Airmic members.

Seminar S6 – Chartered Institute of Loss Adjusters (CILA)

Business Interruption Policy Wordings – challenges highlighted by claims experience

The CILA’s BI Specialist Interest Group produced a report with the beguiling name of “Business Interruption Policy Wordings – Challenges Highlighted by Claims Experience” to promote revision of the BI wording. The objective is to make BI insurance more user friendly so policyholders have more confidence in the efficacy of their cover. Our workshop will help you address the BI wording ambiguities that currently exist.  We will also give the latest update about the market’s response to the report in actually changing or planning to change wordings so far.
