Conference success a measure of Airmic’s progress.

Risk managers arrived at the annual conference in upbeat mood, as well they might. When they last gathered in Brighton, in 2005, there were just over 100 members present; this time there were more than 400. Attendances smashed all records, with a grand total including exhibitors of around 1300 in the conference centre.

Outgoing chair Nicholas Bailey said it had been “a great year for the association … I would like to think we have done a very good job for our members.” He highlighted the technical output, which he said had been “tremendous”. He also praised the work of the secretariat, continuing development of Airmic Academy and the new fast track initiative to support younger members.

“We’re trying to deliver for the next generation,” he said.

Hurrell hails role of members in their organisations

Chief executive John Hurrell painted a picture of a flourishing association almost exactly fifty years since its creation – membership up by more than10% year-on-year and finances in rude health despite the economic environment. “I would like to think our founding fathers would be very proud that their original vision has turned into this modern association that we see today,” he said.

Members, he said, are knowledgeable solution-seekers who are “so critical to their organisations”. He described risk management as the essential link between operations and strategy.

Thank you

In his closing speech Chairman Nicholas Bailey paid tribute Susi Ozkurt, our unflappable and ever-alert conference organiser. However, as Susi would be the first to acknowledge, a lot of people made its success possible. Airmic would like to thank all members of the Programme Committee and secretariat for their hard work.
