Moody’s invites Airmic members to a briefing on the implications of the rapidly shifting U.S. policy landscape for Ireland. While the Irish economy has benefited significantly from its ability to attract foreign investment, this leaves the economy vulnerable to decisions made by a few large multinational firms. Tariff rates and tax policies enter these decisions. While the new U.S.-EU trade deal introduces some degree of certainty to transatlantic relations, significant uncertainties persist—ranging from the conditionalities attached to the deal itself to broader geopolitical and structural challenges. This session will delve into Ireland’s exposure to the tumultuous shift in U.S. policy amid intensifying geopolitical tensions. Our experts will unpack the short-term risks and provide insights into the longer-term structural vulnerabilities that Ireland faces. Participants will be armed with a strategy to monitor signs of exposure and resilience over the future.
By the end of the session, you will be able to:
- Recognise the Global Economic Landscape: Participants will be able to describe the current global economic outlook, identify key macroeconomic risks, and explain how these dynamics influence trade and investment flows
- Trace the Evolution of U.S. Trade Policy: Participants will gain insight into the historical and recent developments in U.S. tariff policy, including motivations behind key shifts and their implications for global trade partners
- Assess Ireland’s Vulnerability to U.S. Policy Changes: Participants will evaluate Ireland’s exposure to U.S. policy shifts, particularly through its multinational sector, and analyze sector-specific sensitivities such as pharmaceuticals and technology.
- Explore the Role of Ireland’s Corporate Tax System: Participants will examine how Ireland’s corporate tax regime contributes to its economic model and discuss how international and U.S. policy changes may affect its sustainability
- Identify Short- and Long-Term Risks to the Irish Economy: Participants will be able to distinguish between near-term and structural risks facing Ireland, and develop a framework for monitoring key indicators and policy developments
