KPMG is a global organization of independent professional services firms providing Audit, Tax and Advisory services. We operate in 144 countries and have more than 230,000 people working in member firms around the world.

KPMG International is the entity with which all member firms of the KPMG network of independent member firms are affiliated. it acts as a coordinating entity, carrying out certain business activities for the benefit of KPMG firms. More than 2,500 colleagues make up the KPMG International team, with a focus on ensuring global consistency and providing expertise to support member firms in the achievement of KPMG’s Trust and Growth ambition. KPMG International is comprised of a number of global teams, including: Global Advisory, Global Audit, Global Clients & Markets, Global Corporate Affairs, Global People, Global Quality and Risk Management, Global Tax & Legal, Global Technology and Knowledge,  the International Office of General Counsel, and the Office of Chief Administrative Officer. Working together, our global team is changing the way our business operates, delivering value to our member firms and driving positive change in the communities we serve.

This is an outstanding opportunity to work within a large and expanding legal team of excellent calibre. The International Office of General Counsel ("IOGC") is a team based in four countries (UK, US, Australia, Netherlands). The team provides legal advice on key strategic issues for and supports the execution of key business decisions made by KPMG International. It also supports KPMG International and the KPMG global network in dealing with legal, regulatory and reputational issues and risks. The role will also involve working closely with the Global Insurance Management Team (“GIMT”) within KPMG International. The GIMT is responsible for the management, oversight and coordination of KPMG's Global Professional Indemnity Insurance (PII) and Global First Party Cyber Insurance Programs. The GIMT acts as a principal point of contact between insurers/brokers and KPMG Member Firms, providing guidance to KPMG Member Firms on matters pertaining to the Global PII and Cyber insurance programs. It is also involved in the development and procurement of other insurance placements for KPMG International.

The role will involve advising and assisting on primarily non-contentious insurance matters, in particular the renewal of KPMG's global cyber security insurance program as well as advising on KPMG's professional indemnity insurance program and on D&O insurances. In addition, and as this is a particularly dynamic time for the organisation, we would expect this to include providing input on strategic decisions on the overall structure of the insurance arrangements, as well as advising on policy wording and assisting with regulatory compliance issues. The individual will work under the supervision of a Director in IOGC who is a specialist insurance lawyer. Some international travel may be required for this role but it will not usually be at short notice.

We are looking for a qualified lawyer with at least 5-6 years PQE (or equivalent if not England and Wales qualified) although all candidates who demonstrate an ability to fulfil the role will be actively considered. A successful candidate is likely to have or to be able to demonstrate: (i) Legal experience of advising on and negotiation of insurance policies and/or advising on disputes between insurers/insureds (in each case, whether on behalf of insurers/insureds); (ii) experience of professional indemnity insurance is desirable; (iii) experience of cyber and/or D&O insurance would be advantageous but is not essential; (iv) legal experience of working on complex commercial matters involving multiple different jurisdictions. Previous experience of advising on issues arising from compliance with local insurance regulations across the world is an advantage, but not essential; (v) Knowledge of the general process involved in placing and renewing large multinational commercial insurance programs (including the role of brokers, insurers and reinsurers). To this end, experience of working directly within the London insurance market for an insurer or broker (via secondments or otherwise) would be advantageous but is not essential.

A successful candidate is likely to have or to be able to demonstrate: (i) Excellent technical legal skills; (ii) an understanding of the business drivers affecting, and legal and regulatory risk faced by large global organisations; (iii) Awareness of own strengths and areas for development; (iv) Ability to work collaboratively and flexibly as part of a supportive team while taking responsibility for own work; (v) excellent attention to detail with a strong focus on delivering outputs to the highest quality standards; (vi) excellent communication skills - both written and verbal; (vii) ability to provide clear direction to team members and internal and external stakeholders with ability to prioritise conflicting demands; (viii) Ability to maintain effective and collaborative relationships with key business leaders and external stakeholders such as insurers and brokers; (ix) ability to engage and deal with individuals across different functions, geopgraphies and at all levels within the organisation; (x) Fluency in English; additional language skills are an advantage but are not essential. An active interest in developments and innovation in the insurance market and in reflecting on how such innovation can be leveraged to support our insurance arrangements would be advantageous and the role will offer significant opportunity for a successful candidate to engage with external stakeholders and relationship partners in this regard.
