PAS56

British Standards Institution Publicly Available Specification 56 (PAS 56), drawn up in conjunction with the Business Continuity Institute, is the UK's best practice standard for business continuity management. PAS 56 sets out a fully risk-based process and framework for developing business continuity plans for use by any organisation that wishes to safeguard operational continuity. The approach is based on risk analysis and impact assessment. It covers fifteen key criteria, enabling an organisation to benchmark its own arrangements in each one.

Although welcomed by AIRMIC as a benchmark of good business continuity management practice, the Association has called for PAS 56 to be strengthened in the areas of crisis management, crisis communications and supply chain continuity.

Although primarily a tool for preparing plans to deal with recovery from fire, flood etc, PAS 56 compliance could also improve the marketability of an organisation's business interruption insurances through a demonstrable ability to return to normal working in the event of a crisis. It is likely that in future insurance underwriters will increasingly ask for evidence of PAS 56 compliance when they renew interruption insurance policies or consider new proposals for such insurance.

With the increased emphasis on corporate governance, compliance with PAS 56 may also provide valuable protection for the Board in the eyes of regulators, shareholders and the courts.
